The SongRoom - Research and Evaluation

Bridging the Gap in School Achievement through the Arts

The Song Room recently commissioned a 3 year research project to investigate the impact of its programs on disadvantaged children. The research demonstrates the positive impact of The Song Room’s arts-based intervention on improved school attendance (65% less absenteeism with participation in longer-term TSR in comparison to those that have not participated), higher academic achievement (including the equivalent of 1 year gain in NAPLAN literacy for longer-term schools compared to equivalent schools), as well as enhanced social and emotional wellbeing.

New Moves

The Song Room recently partnered with Victoria University to investigate the effectiveness of its programs on young people from refugee backgrounds. The research report, New Moves, demonstrates clear positive impacts for this group of young people related to fostering sense of wellbeing, promoting sense of belonging and social inclusion and enhancing engagement with learning, as a result of participating in The Song Room programs.

Creative Arts Indigenous Parents Engagement (CAIPE)

The CAIPE program in Queensland is pioneering a new educational approach as it supports Indigenous families and communities to ‘reach in’ to schools and education providers to develop partnerships with them with the aim of enhancing their children’s educational outcomes. Parents and students from over 20 schools and other organisations from Brisbane (urban); Mackay (regional); and Cunnamulla (remote) will be engaged by The Song Room over the 18 month program.

The Song Room has also commissioned Educational Transformations to conduct an independent research project to develop an evidence base to access the merit of involving Indigenous parents in their children's education, and the outcomes of their involvement.

Harmony In Strings

Harmony in Strings is a new innovative program model using cello and violin music education in a disadvantaged school to encourage music education and social cohesion through into secondary school. Students from Year 4, 5 and 6 from a disadvantaged Primary School in an area of Victoria considered low socio-economic, high English as a second language (ESL) will pilot the program over 3 years.

The primary objective of this research is to investigate whether access to music education in Primary School increases the likelihood of students continuing with music in Secondary School. Consideration will be given to how the impact of the program may vary between different age groups.  The research will be conducted over the next four years, providing a comprehensive longitudinal examination.

Transforming Indigenous Education through the Arts - Executive Summary Report

The independent research and strategic education advisors, Educational Transformations, have recently released a comprehensive report on the effectiveness of The Song Room’s programs. Educational Transformations have evaluated program data collected over the course of The Song Room Creative Arts Indigenous Parental Engagement (CAIPE) program, and discovered that The Song Room programs are proven to increase school attendance, improve literacy through arts education and significantly improve parental engagement in their children’s educational outcomes.
